PPC backs workers' rights

Labour PPC for Spelthorne - Robert Ferguson backed Andrew Miller MP's call for the Government to legislate on employment rights for temporary workers.

"I was delighted with the news that the Government, unions and businesses have come to an agreement over legislation. There are about 1.3 million people who will benefit from this legislation many of them here in Spelthorne. We must not be afraid to shout from the rooftops about the good things that the Labour Government is doing because we all know that there are people ready to blame the us when things go wrong.

In response to criticism of the agreement from sectors of the business community our PPC had this to say.

"They said this about the minimum wage, but the evidence is not there to support the claims that this will have a big adverse impact upon business. More to the point, this is the right thing to do to protect temporary workers. Some people have been employed on a temporary basis for many years just so that their employer can avoid granting them certain basic rights. This bill will put an end to that."
