Hustings and selection process

The Hustings and final vote on for the selection of our spokesperson for parliamentary affairs was held in on 16th August at Asfhord Community Hall. Three candidates contested the final selection having been shortlisted by the Constituency Party's Executive Committee. The three candidates were Robert Ferguson, Imitiaz Khan and James Walsh. Each candidate spoke was given five minutes to set out what they would bring to role followed by 20 minutes of questions both written and from the floor.

After a close contest which went down to second preferences Robert Ferguson was selected by the party members to represent Spelthorne.

Robert Ferguson - Spokesperson for parliamentary affairs

After the hustings Robert said "First I want to say a big thanks to everyone who has been involved in the process, to John May and John Went, to Imitiaz and James for the spirit in which the contest was carried out and to everyone who voted in the hustings.

"I'm really looking forward to working with everyone in Spelthorne, some of you I know and others I'll get to know. There's plenty of work to be done here - supporting affordable housing to help children stay in the area they have grown up in, improving public transport to provide a boost for the local economy and helping some of the vulnerable and isolated residents by giving them care and support.

"We also have to make sure people know about the positive things that Labour has done in Government - building a strong economy, a fairer and more tolerant society, reducing crime and slashing hospital waiting lists. And we have to tell people about the work that is still to be done and how Labour is going to achieve progress in education and health care, housing and the environment."
